Freud tarafından ortaya koyulan aktarım kavramı, psikanaliz sürecinin bilinçdışı malzemeyi ortaya çıkarmasında ve anlamlandırmasında kritik bir öneme sahiptir. En sade tanı mıyla aktarım, analizanın, geçmişteki önemli ilişkilerde yaşadığı duygu ve deneyimleri, analistle ilişkisinde tekrar yaşaması anlamına gelir. Böylece aktarım, analizanın geçmişteki çatışmalarını ve ilişkilerini, analistin yorumlamaları sayesinde yeniden ele almasına ve çözümlemesine olanak tanır. Freud 1912'de şöyle yazmıştı: Aktarımın çözümlenmesi tedavideki ana görevlerden biridir. Ancak Freud bu aşamada aktarımdan ne anlıyordu, kavram hakkındaki görüşleri nasıl değişti ve aktarım gerçekten çözümlenebilir mi? Yeni psikanalitik yaklaşımların gelişmesiyle, aktarıma dair anlayış da değişiklik göstermiştir.
