Ancak Birinci Dünya Savaşı'nın başlamasıyla yedek subay olarak Çanakkale'ye gönderilir. Yaralanınca İstanbul'a döner, iyileştikten sonra bu sefer de Filistin cephesine tayin edilir. Gazze'de İngilizlerle çarpışırken esir düşerek Mısır'daki esir kamplarına götürülür. Oldukça kötü koşulları olan kamptan kaçmayı başaran Macit'i talih, Türk dostu bir prensin Nil nehri kıyısındaki villasına sürükler. Burada, Prens ve kızı Fatma'yla güzel günler geçiren Macit'in aklı Humret'te, gözü kulağı ise memleketin kurtuluş haberlerindedir. Prens ve kızıyla birlikte Avrupa seyahatindeyken Macit, Mustafa Kemal Paşa'nın Anadolu'da yeni bir mücadele örgütlediğini öğrenir, Anadolu'ya gelir ve mücadeleye katılır. Burhan Cahit Morkaya, bir subayın anı defterinden yararlanarak kurguladığını belirttiği Harp Dönüşü romanında, Birinci Dünya Savaşı'yla aynı anda başlayan bir aşk hikayesiyle birlikte cephelerde ve esir kamplarında yaşananları, savaşın bireylerde, ailelerde ve toplumun tüm katmanlarında yarattığı ahlaki ve sosyal yıkımı gerçekçi bir şekilde aktarmaktadır. Burhan Cahit Morkaya (1892-1949) Gazeteci, yazar ve matbaacı Burhan Cahit Morkaya, İstanbul'da doğdu. Mercan İdadisi'ni bitirdikten sonra Mekteb-i Mülkiye'den mezun oldu (1912). Gazeteciliğe öğrencilik yıllarında Yeni Gazete'de başladı. Osmanlı Milli Ajansı'nda çalıştı. Servet-i Fünun'da hikaye ve fantezi türünde yazıları ile Fransızcadan çevirileri yayımlandı. 1920-1928 yılları arasında mizah gazetesi Karagöz'ün müdürlüğünü ve başyazarlığını üstlendi. Karagöz, onun yönetiminde Anadolu'da en çok okunan popüler gazeteler arasına girdi. 1928 yılında, ölümüne kadar çıkarmaya devam edeceği Yeni Köroğlu gazetesini kurdu. 1920'li ve 30'lu yılların en çok okunan popüler roman yazarlarından biri olan Morkaya, çoğu roman olmak üzere hikaye, tiyatro, fantezi ve fıkra gibi edebi türlerde kırka yakın eser kaleme aldı. Bunların bazıları İkdam, Son Saat, Akşam, Vatan ve Milliyet gibi dönemin önde gelen gazetelerinde tefrika edildi. Geçimini kalemiyle kazanan ve romanlarında çoğunlukla Birinci Dünya Savaşı ve sonrasında Türkiye'de oluşan yeni toplumsal hayatı, kadın-erkek ilişkilerini ve Batılılaşmayı işleyen Morkaya'nın yarattığı tipler, isimleri ve yaşantılarıyla halk tarafından beğenilmiş ve adeta bir nesle rol model olmuştur.
