If you don't need the middle rack, you do NOT have to use it, as it is optional and can be removed. It is easy to assemble, even though the single diagram of instructions that came with it appeared to be for a different model. The rack is everything it is supposed to be: super sturdy, easy to put together, and moves around easily.
