Ron Chernow All Books Editorial Review
Washington: A Life is a Pulitzer Prize-winning book that brings to life the figure of George Washington, painting a picture that is both human and heroic. There is no shortage of information about George Washington in the public record but surprisingly much of the information that is available comes directly from the man himself. There are many interesting facts that are uncovered in this book, for example, he had a hot temper that he worked hard to control, and he was effusively affectionate in writing with a few different women, but not his wife. The book also sheds light on Washington's relationship with other political figures at the time, including John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. The biography is well written and emotionally engaging, leaving the reader feeling like they have truly experienced the man's life. Most importantly, it's a warts-and-all biography that doesn't shy away from Washington's flaws. Highly recommended for anyone interested in history.
