Answer: While cutting up the spring can be done, the spring material is very hard to cut and it would be a pain in the neck to do so. Moreover, the spring can be stretched to 20+ ft of length and can be used for very compelling demonstrations. Shortening the spring would make the demonstrations harder to see.
